Food Safety and Hygiene

Food safety and hygiene relates to the handling, preparing and storing of food and drink to ensure it is safe to consume. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is the main body responsible for feed and food safety law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Local councils may inspect businesses involved in the food production and distribution process. The council may then suggest any improvements that a business will need to make. In serious circumstances, a business will be sent a banning notice preventing the premises from operating until the improvements have been made.

Breaching food safety and food hygiene regulations is a criminal offence and is punished by way of an unlimited fine or, in serious cases, up to two years’ imprisonment.

Regulatory lawyers at Nicholls & Nicholls can advise on a range of breaches, provide advice and representation at hearings and engage with prosecuting authorities to secure the best outcome for you and your business.
